Success Stories

Jason's method of making complex tennis concepts simple, has had an impact on all his players. Here, we'd like to showcase some detailed examples of his coaching successes.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands

The Opportunity

In the summer of 2006, Bethanie Mattek was ranked 101 in the World.  This earned her direct entry into the Wimbledon singles main draw and with it the opportunity to play defending champion Venus Williams on Centre Court. Bethanie had been on tour for about five years and had never cracked the top 100 and never won a match in a Grand Slam.  This match would be no exception; she lost 6-1 6-0. I recognized then that she had the ingredients necessary to be ranked significantly higher if only she knew how to put everything together.

Six months after her defeat at Wimbledon, I had an opportunity to begin working with her and refine her athletic game into a new work of art. I promised her it would take 18 months to put everything together the way I envisioned.

To be honest, we changed almost everything in my game in the space of three weeks. I’ve changed my serve, my forehand and my movement’s completely different…It’s like I’m starting out again. It could take up to 18 months before I see the benefits"

The Strategy

I put together a customized plan for her that impacted everything about her game - including her rackets and strings, her clothing, and how she played. While on tour across six countries and four continents, we worked on changing or enhancing her:

  • Footwork

  • Balance

  • Posture

  • Extension on her forehand

  • Changing direction of her shots using her hips

  • Hitting the right spot on the ball (see article in the blog)

  • Watching the ball better by turning her head to watch contact.

  • Having more and better strategies

  • Playing a few shots ahead.

  • One of the most fun things I taught her was anticipation.  Moving early and efficiently to the right spot is so satisfying.  Bethanie used this to perfection in her 6-4 6-4 win over top 10 opponent Tatiana Golovin.

The Results

She cracked the top hundred, won a 50k challenger, won matches at Wimbledon and the US Open, won doubles titles in Bogota and Amelia Island all while we made huge strides in her game.

As promised, after about 18 months, Bethanie was able to independently take what we worked on and surprise everybody but me by making the fourth round of Wimbledon. She beat defending finalist Marion Bartoli along the way, eventually losing a tough match to Serena Williams 6-3 6-3.  Bethanie’s ranking jumped to 39.

Bethanie then became a dominating doubles specialist winning 27 career doubles titles including the titles below.
